Author Visits to Schools

Since the publication of Scruffy in 2007, Barbara has been a regular visitor to both primary and secondary schools. In primary schools, she prefers individual groups to a single assembly, tailoring her talk to the relevant age group and is happy to work with all ages, including Reception. Questions are encouraged, leading to lively and very enjoyable sessions.

With secondary schools, depending on the requirements of the school and the time available, Barbara will give a general talk about writers whose books have changed history, with tales from her own fascinating career which took her from the Caribbean to the Middle East. Using power point and samples of text, she also demonstrates to students how they can improve their own writing skills. Where a double period is available, Barbara also conducts creative workshops for year 9s.
